EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali or Dictionary of Natural Sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two intriguing species of bristle worms or polychaetes: the Splendid Fireworm, Hesione splendida, and Syllis monilaris. The illustration, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, is a testament to the exquisite detail and artistry of 19th-century scientific illustration. The Splendid Fireworm, depicted on the left, is characterized by its vibrant coloration and long, slender body adorned with bristle-like setae. This polychaete is native to the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts and is known for its ability to emit a bright red or orange mucus as a defense mechanism against predators. On the right, the Syllis monilaris, or the Slender Worm, displays a more subdued appearance with its translucent body and distinct ringed pattern. This polychaete is commonly found in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The engraving also includes a variety of marine organisms, including several species of fish, such as the Nile Perch, Centropomus, Kechr, Lates niloticus, Sleeper, Gudgeon, Prochilodus, Macrolepidotus ophiocara, and Macrolepidota. These additional illustrations highlight the extensive scope of Jussieu's work and the importance of documenting the natural world during this period of scientific discovery. Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840) is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work continues to inspire and captivate audiences today. This stunning engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of marine life and the remarkable achievements of scientific illustration during the 19th century.
