EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured lithograph from the late 19th century, a fashionable woman, known as the Merveilleuse, is depicted taking a leisurely promenade in front of the Bains Vigier or Vigiers thermal baths on the banks of the River Seine in Paris. The year is 1797, during the Directory period of the French Revolution. The Merveilleuse, an influential figure in French society, is dressed in the height of fashion. She wears a spencer jacket with a high collar and long sleeves, a bonnet adorned with a ribbon, and a classical robe with intricate patterns. Accompanied by a couple in a horse-drawn gig or chaise longue, the Merveilleuse and her companions appear to be enjoying a drive along the Champs-Élysées, a popular destination for Parisians during this era. The presence of a whiskey bottle on the carriage suggests that they may be partaking in an afternoon of relaxation and revelry. The Bains Vigier, a popular thermal bathhouse, can be seen in the background. The elegant architecture of the building, with its tall columns and intricate detailing, adds to the refined atmosphere of the scene. The woman's poised demeanor and the elegant carriage, driven by a smartly-dressed man holding the reins, further emphasize the opulence and sophistication of the scene. This beautiful lithograph, created by R.V. after an illustration by Francois Courboin, is taken from Octave Uzanne's influential book "Fashion in Paris," published by William Heinemann in London in 1898. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and culture of the late 18th century, providing a window into the world of the Merveilleuse and her contemporaries.
