EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a moment in the art of fencing, specifically the Gentlemen Fencers in the Tierce return after the Tierce thrust. The Tierce is a fencing technique using a three-quarter sword, where the fencer delivers a powerful thrust to the opponent's right side. In this image, we see two gentlemen engaged in a duel, each poised and ready for the next move. The print is an exquisite copperplate engraving, created after an illustration by Thomas Rowlandson from Domenico Angelo's renowned fencing manual, "The School of Fencing, or The Ecole des Armes," published in London in 1787. Angelo was an Italian fencing master who had a significant influence on the development of European swordplay. In this scene, the fencers have just executed the Tierce thrust and are now in the process of returning to their guard positions. The first fencer, on the left, has parried his opponent's counterattack with a parry and is now preparing to deliver another Tierce thrust. The second fencer, on the right, is in the process of recovering his guard, his eyes focused intently on his opponent. The intricate details of the gentlemen's clothing, the elegant curves of their swords, and the dynamic poses of the fencers all contribute to the visual appeal of this print. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th-century fencing, showcasing the skill, grace, and intensity of this ancient martial art.
