EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving depicts Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI (1165-1197), also known as Heinrich VI, Henricus VI, Asper, King of the Germans, and King of Sicily. The image is taken from the 17th-century publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht. Henry VI was a member of the House of Hohenstaufen, a prominent German dynasty that ruled the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages. He was the son of Frederick Barbarossa, the famous Holy Roman Emperor, and his mother was Beatrice of Burgundy. Henry's reign was marked by significant political and military developments. He was crowned King of the Romans in 1188 and was later elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1191. The engraving portrays Henry in a classical, imperial style, reminiscent of the Roman Caesars or Germanic Kaisers. He is shown wearing a crown and holding a scepter and orb, symbols of his imperial power. The inscription at the bottom of the print identifies him as "Henricus VI, Imperator Romanorum, Rex Teutonicorum, Rex Sicilie," meaning "Henry VI, Emperor of the Romans, King of the Germans, King of Sicily." The token coin depicted in Henry's hand is a symbol of his rule and authority. The coin's design includes a cross, likely representing the Holy Roman Empire, and the initials "P.S." or "Philippus Sueviae Dux," which refer to Philip of Swabia, Henry's successor and a member of the same Hohenstaufen dynasty. This engraving is a testament to the rich history and artistic traditions of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages.
