EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving depicts an Indian elephant, Elephas maximus indicus, a subspecies of the Asian elephant, which is currently endangered. The image is taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849. The illustration was created by Edouard Travies and the engraving was executed by Fournier. Indian elephants are the largest living terrestrial animals in India and are distinguished from their African counterparts by their smaller ears, concave backs, and a more curved and downward-pointing upper lip. They are found primarily in the forests of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Unfortunately, Indian elephants face numerous threats, including habitat loss due to deforestation, human-elephant conflict, poaching for their ivory tusks, and fragmentation of their populations. These threats have led to a decline in their numbers, with an estimated population of only around 27,000 individuals remaining in the wild. The Indian elephant plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the forests it inhabits, as it helps to create and maintain waterholes, disperses seeds, and provides a food source for various scavengers. It is also an important cultural symbol in India, featuring prominently in Hindu mythology and folklore. Conservation efforts to protect Indian elephants include the establishment of protected areas, community-based conservation programs, and the promotion of alternative livelihoods for people living in areas where human-elephant conflict is common. It is essential that we continue to work towards the protection of this magnificent and endangered species, not only for its ecological importance but also for the cultural and historical significance it holds for the people of India and beyond.
