EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative 14th century image, the renowned English theologian and reformer, John Wyclif, sends forth some of his devoted followers, known as Lollards, on their mission to spread his teachings throughout Britain. Wyclif, also referred to as Wycliffe, is depicted in the center, dressed in academic robes, with a serious expression and an open Bible before him. He is surrounded by a group of earnest Lollards, each holding a copy of the English Bible, which Wyclif had translated from Latin around 1380. The Lollards, who took their name from the Old English word for "mumblers," were a lay religious movement that emerged during the late Middle Ages in England. They were staunch opponents of the absolute authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church, advocating instead for a more direct relationship between the individual and God. Wyclif's teachings, which emphasized the importance of scripture in the vernacular language, resonated deeply with the Lollards and helped fuel the early English Reformation. This powerful image underscores the significance of Wyclif's influence on the religious landscape of medieval England. As the first major figure in the English Reformation, Wyclif challenged the established religious order and paved the way for the eventual break with Catholicism. The Lollards, emboldened by their leader's teachings, went forth to spread the word, igniting a fire of reform that would continue to burn for centuries to come.
