EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the Long-tailed Paradise Whydah, Vidua paradisaea, in both its breeding plumage and post-moulting (non-breeding) male appearance. The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837, and was created by the skilled hand of Burggraaff. The Long-tailed Paradise Whydah is a striking bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. Males in breeding plumage display their vibrant colors and long, iridescent tail feathers to attract females during mating season. After the breeding season, the males undergo a complete moult, shedding their bright plumage and adopting a more subdued appearance to blend in with their surroundings. The Long-tailed Paradise Whydah is a member of the whydah family, which is known for its intriguing mating behaviors. Males form leks, or display grounds, where they perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. Once a female has chosen a male, she lays her eggs in his nest, which he incubates and raises as his own. This exquisite lithograph is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the habitats of birds like the Long-tailed Paradise Whydah. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the bird to life, making it a cherished addition to any collection of ornithological prints.
