EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Norman Weaponry," is an intriguing visual representation of the various arms and armor used during the Norman era, primarily in warfare. The illustration includes a diverse range of weapons, showcasing the tactical versatility of the Norman military. At the center of the image, a Norman knight wields a lance (212), a long, pointed spear used for thrusting attacks during horseback charges. Surrounding the knight are an assortment of other weapons. A gisarma or halberd (213) can be seen, which is a versatile polearm consisting of a spearhead on one end and a axe blade on the other. The double battle axe, or bipennis (214), is depicted, a fearsome weapon consisting of two axe heads on a single handle. Battle axes (215, 226, 227) are also present, single-headed axes used for both chopping and thrusting. Spears (216, 217) are shown, including a jousting spear, which was used during the formalized tournaments of the Middle Ages. The cross-bearing orb, or Reichsapfel (218-220), and sceptres (221-223) are also depicted, symbolizing the power and authority of the Norman monarchy. A dagger (224) and a sword (225) are included, both essential weapons for close combat. Arrows with a flask (228) and an ornate head (229) are shown, and a crossbow (230) is present, representing the long-range capabilities of the Norman arsenal. This engraving, created by Robert von Spalart in 1810, offers a fascinating glimpse into the weaponry of the Norman era, providing valuable insights into their military tactics and the technological advancements of the time.
