EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the Royal Standard Public House, located in the heart of London's Euston area (NW1 3ES). The image presents a timeless view of the pub's exterior, with its distinctive red brick walls, ornate windows, and the iconic "Royal Standard" sign proudly displayed above the entrance. The history of the Royal Standard, however, is not without its challenges. As the reverse of this print reveals, the pub had a rich trading record, with business operations documented as far back as 1934. Yet, its story took a tragic turn on September 25, 1940, when the pub was destroyed by fire during the intense bombing raids that ravaged London during World War II. Despite the devastation, the spirit of the Royal Standard endured, and the pub was eventually demolished after the war. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, offering a glimpse into the history of London's pubs and the resilience of the communities they served. The Royal Standard, though no longer standing, continues to hold a special place in the annals of Euston's history.
