EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, Bishop Ranulf Flambards daring escape from The Tower of London unfolds. The year was 1101, and Ranulf, a Norman bishop who had fallen out of favor with King Henry I of England, found himself a prisoner within the formidable walls of the Tower. Determined to break free, Ranulf devised a cunning plan. He managed to secure the help of sympathetic guards, who smuggled a long, strong rope into the Tower, hidden within a barrel of beer. The intricately woven brown rope, visible in the image, was the bishop's ticket to freedom. Ranulf, clad in a simple brown tunic and with his shaven head visible, waits anxiously for the opportune moment to make his escape. His expression is a mix of determination and trepidation, as he knows the risks involved in attempting to flee from the Tower. The night of his escape, Ranulf, with the help of his accomplices, managed to scale the Tower walls using the hidden rope. They made their way to a waiting boat and rowed away from the shores of London, leaving the Tower and its guards far behind. Bishop Ranulf Flambards daring escape from The Tower of London is a testament to his resourcefulness and the intrigue of the medieval period. This image, captured by Tom Gillmor for Mary Evans Picture Library, provides a glimpse into a time when the line between freedom and imprisonment was often thin, and the stakes were high.
