EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of fish and the traditional methods of preserving them, specifically sardines and ilisha, two types of herring. The image depicts three different species: Sardina pilchardus, commonly known as the European sardine or simply sardine, and Ilisha africana, known as the West African ilisha or African herring. The scene captures the fish wives in the process of smoking sardines in a traditional smokehouse. The women, dressed in colorful clothing, are shown carefully arranging the freshly caught fish on wooden racks over a smoldering fire. The smokehouse, with its thatched roof and open sides, allows the smoke to circulate freely, preserving the fish and imparting a distinctive smoky flavor. Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a prominent figure in the field of ichthyology during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His encyclopedia, which covered a wide range of marine creatures, was considered a significant contribution to the scientific community. This engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, not only showcases the natural history of these fish species but also provides a glimpse into the cultural practices of fish preservation during the time.
