EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled "Saxon Archers and Slingers," transports us back to the 8th century, offering a glimpse into the lives of our ancient Saxon ancestors. The image depicts a group of Saxon warriors, some wielding slingshots for hunting, while others are armed with longbows, all stationed in a castle tower. The Saxon on the left is shown in the act of slinging a shot using a slingshot. He holds the slingshot in his left hand, with the elastic band taut between his thumb and index finger. In his right hand, he grips a smooth, rounded stone projectile. The slingshot's weighted pouch, or yoke, is held against his thigh for added leverage. The Saxon's focused expression and the determined set of his jaw indicate his readiness to take aim and fire. The archer on the right is poised to release an arrow from his longbow. His left hand cradles the bow, while his right hand pulls back the string, notching an arrow. The arrow's feathered fletching can be seen protruding from the string. Both the slinger and the archer are dressed in typical Saxon attire, with short tunics and leggings, and their hair is styled in the traditional Saxon braids. This illustration, taken from Joseph Strutt's "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," published by Chatto and Windus in London in 1876, provides a fascinating insight into the military and hunting practices of the Saxon people during the 8th century. The intricate details and vibrant colours of the lithograph bring the scene to life, allowing us to connect with our past in a truly engaging way.
