EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative etching captures a moment in time outside the historic Almshouses in Church Street, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire. Dating back to the 15th century, these buildings were constructed between 1417 and 1428 under the Guild of the Holy Cross, with the primary purpose of housing the needy members of the guild. The first-floor rooms were repurposed for teaching from 1560, and it is believed that young William Shakespeare may have attended the King's New School here as a child. The etching, created circa 1920, depicts figures standing outside the Almshouses, their silhouettes casting long shadows against the old stone walls. The muted colors and intricate details of the etching transport us back in time, offering a glimpse into the past and the daily lives of those who lived and learned within these ancient walls. This etching is from Volume 12 of the Ruby Hare magazine, adding to its historical significance and making it a valuable addition to any collection of Stratford-Upon-Avon or Shakespearean history.
