Two connected buildings at Gyantse - the Kumbum, a multi-storied set of Buddhist chapels (L), and the Palcho Monastery (R), from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, two iconic structures of Gyantse, Tibet, come together in a breathtaking display of architecture and history. On the left stands the Kumbum, an intricately designed, multi-storied set of Buddhist chapels, its red and gold roofs shimmering under the sun. To the right lies the Palcho Monastery, a grand complex of whitewashed buildings with vibrant murals and intricate woodwork. This image is taken from an extraordinary album that offers a unique insight into a little-known campaign in world history: the British Tibet Expedition of 1904. Launched from India under the auspices of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, the expedition aimed to counteract perceived Russian influence and protect British interests near the border. The album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, an Aide-de-Camp to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, provides a visual account of this intriguing episode. The photographs within the album depict various aspects of the expedition, from military scenes and monasteries to stunning landscapes, bustling towns, and local inhabitants. The album offers a rare glimpse into a time when the British Empire expanded its reach into the far reaches of Asia, and the complexities of diplomacy and cultural exchange unfolded against the backdrop of ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes. The capture of Lhasa, the ultimate goal of the expedition, resulted in several concessions from Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. However, the worth of this endeavor remains a subject of debate. This evocative image of the Kumbum and Palcho Monastery serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage that was both influenced and preserved during this fascinating period in history.
