EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite cover design, titled "P&O Pencillings," is an illustration from a rare and valuable hardbound volume published by Day and Son in London in 1892. The illustrations within were created by artist William Whitelock Lloyd during his voyage aboard the P&O steamship Himalaya from Southampton to India via the Suez Canal in 1891. Lloyd's pen and ink drawings offer a captivating glimpse into life aboard a luxury liner during the late Victorian era. The illustrations were produced on board the ship and sold to passengers as a keepsake of their voyage. The cover design showcases a lively scene of the ocean liner in full sail, with the Union Jack proudly displayed against a backdrop of vibrant colors - green, gilt, gold, flag, red, yellow, blue, and white. The use of pencil adds a touch of humor and comic relief, making these illustrations not only historically significant but also visually engaging. The cover design was lithographed by Emrik and Binger, and the volume measures 14 x 10 inches. The intricate details of the illustrations, combined with the high-quality lithography, add to the overall charm and value of this collectible item. This cover design is a beautiful representation of the transportation revolution of the late 1800s and the allure of ocean travel during that time. It is a must-have for collectors of maritime history, vintage illustrations, and anyone with an appreciation for the elegance and adventure of the past.
