The Island of the Dead
The Island of the Dead was the destination for all who died inside the prison camps at former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia. Of the 1646 graves recorded to exist there, only 180, those of prison staff and military personnel, are marked. The prison closed in 1877. The convicts and paupers are buried on the lower side of the Island close to the water and the free people are buried on the higher ground. Date: 1930s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting print captures the solemn beauty of The Island of the Dead, a place shrouded in history and tragedy. Located on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania, Australia, this island served as the final resting place for all who perished within the prison camps of a former convict settlement.
With only 180 marked graves out of 1646 recorded burials, The Island of the Dead stands as a stark reminder of the harsh conditions and brutal realities faced by those imprisoned there. The convicts and paupers are laid to rest on the lower side of the island near the water, while prison staff and military personnel occupy higher ground.
The desolate landscape evokes a sense of isolation and sorrow, reflecting upon lives lost and forgotten within these unforgiving walls. As we gaze upon this image from the 1930s, we cannot help but feel a deep connection to those who once walked these grounds, their stories etched into every unmarked grave.
Through this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a chapter of Australian history that is both tragic and poignant. The Island of the Dead serves as a somber memorial to all who suffered within its confines, their memories preserved in these silent stones.
