EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithographic plate, produced by Day and Sons around 1855, showcases the intricate and symbolic blend of religious, civic, and royal emblems. The central compartments are occupied by the Archiepiscopal See of York and the Episcopal See of Manchester. The Archiepiscopal See of York's arms feature the cross keys, a fleur-de-lis, and a pelican in her piety, representing the sacrament of penance, the Virgin Mary, and Christ's sacrifice, respectively. The Episcopal See of Manchester's arms display a lion passant guardant, symbolizing courage and vigilance, and a rose and a bee, representing the city's patron saint, the Virgin Mary, and its industry and hard work. Above these central compartments are the Royal arms of England, featuring three lions passant guardant, representing the monarchy's power and authority. The lower sections of the design feature the arms of the Duchy of Lancaster, which include three lions rampant, symbolizing the historic connection between the monarchy and the Church and the civic authorities. The secondary compartments of the design display the arms of the city of Manchester and the borough of Salford. Manchester's arms include a bee and a rose, representing the city's industry and its patron saint, the Virgin Mary, respectively. Salford's arms feature a bridge and a salt cellar, symbolizing the city's location on the River Irwell and its historical salt production. This beautiful lithographic plate, with its intricate and symbolic design, masterfully captures the complex interplay of religious, civic, and royal authority in mid-19th century England.
