At the heart of this assembly are three remarkable characters: Dr. Samuel Richardson, the celebrated novelist and epistolary pioneer; Dr. Samuel Johnson, the renowned literary critic and lexicographer; and David Garrick, the esteemed actor-manager of the Drury Lane Theatre. Richardson, who had recently published his groundbreaking novel "Pamela," was a frequent visitor to Tunbridge Wells for its therapeutic waters. Johnson, who was also in the area for his health, formed a deep bond with Richardson during their time there.
