EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Panayot Ivanov Hitov (1830-1918), a Bulgarian hajduk, national revolutionary, and voivode, whose bravery and dedication to the cause of Bulgarian liberation from the Ottoman Empire left an indelible mark on the 19th century. Hitov, a charismatic figure with a distinctive moustache and a dagger at his side, was a central figure in the Bulgarian National Liberation Movement. His actions and those of his fellow hajduts, or outlaws, in the Balkan mountains played a crucial role in the resistance against the Ottoman Empire. The Spanish and American illustration, dated 1876, captures Hitov's defiant spirit and his commitment to the cause of freedom. The image, which is colored, showcases Hitov's rugged appearance and his determined gaze, as if to convey his unwavering resolve. Hitov's character as a hajduk, a type of anti-Ottoman rebel and highwayman, added to his legend and made him a symbol of resistance and rebellion. Hitov's exploits were legendary, and he is remembered as a key figure in the Bulgarian National Liberation Movement. His actions, and those of his fellow hajduts, helped pave the way for the eventual liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Today, Hitov's portrait remains a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the Bulgarian people in their quest for freedom and self-determination.
