EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, Boeing F4B-4 special NX9846, formerly known as A9241 and NC-14, is depicted before its extensive modification by renowned stunt pilot Jesse Bristow. In 1940, the US Marine Corps stripped two of its F4B-4s of military equipment and sold them to the Bureau of Commerce (later known as the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA). The second aircraft, NC-14, was quickly released by the government and was soon re-registered as NR9846. Bristow, an accomplished aviator, purchased NR9846 and set out to transform it into a remarkable flying machine. He outfitted the aircraft with I-struts, a full engine cowling, a variable-pitch propeller, and fittings for Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) rockets. After successful air show demonstrations, the modified F4B-4 drew significant attention and admiration from audiences. However, the new owner of the aircraft, following in the footsteps of Bristow, met with tragedy when the aircraft crashed in 1948. Despite the unfortunate ending, this historic photograph captures a moment in time when innovation and aviation prowess combined to create an unforgettable flying machine. This image is a captivating reminder of the early days of aviation, showcasing the transformation of a military aircraft into a thrilling showpiece. The Boeing F4B-4 special NX9846, with its rich history and intriguing modifications, continues to be an essential part of the aeronautical transportation legacy.
