de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk. XV

de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk. XV high-altitude fighter. This is an example of the rare NF Mk. XV with the extended wing-span wings, pressurised cockpit, 70 series Merlin engines, nose AI Mk. VIII radar and belly pack for the four machine-guns displaced by the radar. One prototype (MP469), converted from a B Mk. IV, was fitted with moderately extended wings and five more B Mk, IVs were converted with even longer 62ft 6in span wings. Intended to counter the high-flying Junkers Ju 86P and Ju 86R photo-reconnaissance bombers, the five NF Mk. XVs were deployed with No. 85 Squadron RAF from march 1943 but their intended target rarely flew over the UK from 1943 onward. Date: circa 1943

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk. XV, a high-altitude fighter with extended wing-span wings, pressurized cockpit, and powerful 70 series Merlin engines. This specific model, with the serial number MP469, is a rare prototype that was converted from a B Mk. IV. The NF Mk. XV was designed to counteract the threat of the high-flying Junkers Ju 86P and Ju 86R photo-reconnaissance bombers. Five such aircraft were converted, with some featuring even longer 62ft 6in span wings. The NF Mk. XVs were deployed with No. 85 Squadron RAF starting in March 1943. Intended for high-altitude combat, these aircraft were primarily used to defend against enemy reconnaissance planes that rarely flew over the UK from 1943 onward. The NF Mk. XV's unique features included a nose AI Mk. VIII radar and a belly pack for the four machine guns, which were displaced by the radar. This image, taken circa 1943, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation technology during World War II.
