No. 2 Squadron, Canadian Air Force
Canadian Air Force - The assembled men and machines of No. 2 Squadron Canadian Air Force (1918-1920), probably at Shoreham aerodrome (or, less likely, Upper Heyford). The Canadian Air Force (CAF) was a contingent of two Canadian air force squadrons - one fighter and one bomber - authorized by the British Air Ministry in August 1918 during the close of the First World War. The unit was independent from the Canadian Expeditionary Force and the Royal Air Force (RAF). No.2 Squadron of the Canadian Air Force was equipped with Airco DH.9A day bombers and was active throughout the short life of the Canadian Air Force, from 1918 to 1920. (Canadian Aviation Corps 1914-1915; Canadian Air Force (1918-1920); Canadian Air Force (1920-1924); Royal Canadian Air Force (1924- present)) Date: circa 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the men and machinery of No. 2 Squadron, Canadian Air Force, assembled at Shoreham Aerodrome around 1919. The Canadian Air Force was a unique contingent of two Canadian air force squadrons, one fighter and one bomber, authorized by the British Air Ministry in August 1918 towards the end of the First World War. Independent from both the Canadian Expeditionary Force and the Royal Air Force, No.2 Squadron was equipped with Airco DH.9A day bombers and remained active throughout the short life of the Canadian Air Force, from 1918 to 1920. The Canadian Aviation Corps, the precursor to the Canadian Air Force, was established in 1914-1915, but it wasn't until 1920 that the Canadian Air Force came into being, and it wasn't until 1924 that it became the Royal Canadian Air Force. This image offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Canadian military aviation history, as these brave men prepared for their missions, their determination and focus evident in their expressions and postures. The DH.9As in the background, with their distinctive biplane configuration, stand ready for takeoff, a testament to the technological advancements of the time. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and innovation of the Canadian Air Force during its formative years.
