EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, Prince Louis of Battenberg, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven (1854-1921), is depicted with his gracious wife, Princess Victoria of Hesse (1863-1950), and their two eldest children, Princess Alice of Battenberg (1885-1969) and Princess Louise of Battenberg (1889-1965). The photograph, taken in the year 1890, captures the essence of the Battenberg family's regal heritage and the close bond between its members. Prince Louis, a German-born British naval officer, was a prominent figure in the late Victorian era, eventually becoming a British admiral and later serving as the Governor-General of India. His marriage to Princess Victoria of Hesse, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, further solidified the family's status within the European royal circles. Their eldest daughter, Princess Alice, would later marry Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, becoming the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Their second daughter, Princess Louise, would go on to marry Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden, becoming the Queen of Sweden and the grandmother of King Carl XVI Gustaf. This portrait beautifully encapsulates the history and legacy of the Battenberg family, showcasing the love, grace, and regal bearing of its members. The image is a testament to their enduring influence on European royalty and the close relationships that transcended borders and generations.
