EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Pierre Puget (1622-1694), a versatile French artist whose prolific career spanned various artistic disciplines, including sculpture, painting, architecture, and engineering. Born in Marseille, Puget's artistic talent was recognized at a young age, and he was sent to study under the renowned sculptor Georges Lalanche in Rome. Puget's mastery of sculpture is evident in this print, which depicts him in the act of creating a sculpture. His intense focus and deft touch are palpable, as he chisels away at the stone, bringing his vision to life. However, Puget was not content to limit himself to one art form. He also excelled as a painter, producing works that showcased his deep understanding of anatomy and the human form. As an architect and engineer, Puget's contributions were equally significant. He designed and oversaw the construction of numerous public works projects, including fortifications, bridges, and fountains. One of his most famous engineering feats was the creation of the Grand Bassin, a large basin in Aix-en-Provence, which was used for public bathing and became a popular gathering place. Despite his many accomplishments, Puget remains a somewhat enigmatic figure in the annals of art history. This print offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable artist, whose diverse talents continue to inspire and captivate audiences today.
