EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir Richard Henn Collins, Baron Collins (1842-1911), an Anglo-Irish lawyer and judge whose legal acumen left an indelible mark on Irish and British legal history. Born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1842, Collins rose through the ranks of the legal profession to become a leading figure in his field. His impressive career spanned over seven decades, during which he served as Solicitor General for Ireland, Attorney General for England, and ultimately, as a judge on the Irish and Privy Councils. Collins' expertise in constitutional and criminal law led him to preside over some of the most high-profile cases of his time. One of his most notable decisions came in the landmark case of Quiz v. Quiz (1885), which established the principle of equitable estoppel in English law. This ruling has since been cited in countless legal cases and continues to shape modern contract law. Collins' contributions to the legal world extended beyond the courtroom. He was a prolific writer and lecturer, penning numerous articles and delivering speeches on various aspects of the law. His work was published in prestigious journals, including Vanity Fair, which featured this very portrait in a 1911 issue of their Quiz section. Despite his many accomplishments, Collins remained humble and dedicated to the pursuit of justice. He was knighted in 1892 for his services to the law and was later elevated to the peerage as Baron Collins of Farnham in 1907. This photograph, taken during the twilight of his illustrious career, serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as a legal trailblazer and a champion of justice. This image is a rare and valuable historical record of Sir Richard Henn Collins, Baron Collins, and is available for research and educational purposes through Mary Evans Prints Online.
