In 1803, he led a rebellion against British rule, which was swiftly crushed by the authorities. Emmet was captured on August 23, 1803, and was put on trial for high treason. Despite an eloquent and impassioned defense, he was found guilty and sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The date of his execution was set for September 20, 1803. This poignant print depicts Emmet as he stands on the scaffold, his eyes fixed on the horizon, his heart heavy with the knowledge of the fate that awaits him.
