EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the de Havilland DH106 Comet 4, XW626 (formerly G-APDS), is seen undergoing a significant transformation at the de Havilland factory in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. The Comet 4, a renowned transport aircraft of its time, was undergoing a conversion to test the radar system for the AEW (Airborne Early Warning) Nimrod, a maritime patrol aircraft. The Comet 4, a twin-engine, short-range airliner, was the first commercially successful jet-powered airliner in the world. Its sleek design and advanced technology made it a pioneer in the aviation industry. However, in this instance, the focus was no longer on commercial use but on military applications. The conversion process involved the installation of a large radome under the fuselage, which housed the radar system. The radome was designed to minimize the radar's interference with the aircraft's structure and aerodynamics. The Comet 4's spacious cabin and advanced technology made it an ideal candidate for this conversion. The AEW Nimrod, a long-range maritime patrol aircraft, was equipped with advanced radar systems to detect and track surface and air targets at long ranges. The data collected by the radar was used to direct other assets, such as fighter jets or naval vessels, to intercept or engage the targets. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of both the de Havilland Comet and the AEW Nimrod programs. The Comet 4's conversion marked a significant step forward in the development of military aircraft, while the Nimrod program would go on to become a crucial component of the Royal Air Force's maritime patrol capabilities.
