EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Dominic, also known as Domingo de Guzman, was born on August 8, 1170, in Caleruega, Spain. He is the founder of the Dominican Order, one of the oldest surviving religious institutions in the Catholic Church. The image captured in this print depicts Saint Dominic in the later stages of his life, with a serious and contemplative expression, dressed in the traditional Dominican habit of a white tunic and black cape. Dominic was born into a noble family and studied at Palencia and later at the University of Palencia. He experienced a profound conversion in 1205, during which he heard a voice telling him to 'preach the truth to the people.' In response, he founded the Order of Preachers, also known as the Dominicans, in 1216. The order was dedicated to the evangelization of souls through preaching and the study of the Scriptures. Saint Dominic's charism and vision for the Dominican Order quickly spread throughout Europe. He established monasteries and convents, and his followers became known for their rigorous study of theology and their dedication to poverty and humility. Dominic himself traveled extensively throughout Europe, preaching and founding monasteries, and he was instrumental in the conversion of many souls. Saint Dominic died on August 6, 1221, in Bologna, Italy. He was canonized in 1234 and is now venerated as the patron saint of the Dominican Order and of the Catholic Church's preachers. This print serves as a reminder of Saint Dominic's profound impact on the history of the Catholic Church and the enduring legacy of the Dominican Order.
