EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century oil on canvas painting, titled "St. Teresa in Ecstasy," is an exquisite example of Colonial Baroque art from Bolivia's National Museum of Art in La Paz. Anonymous in origin, this vertical and upright work of art depicts St. Teresa of Avila, a prominent Spanish mystic and reformer of the 16th century. Born in 1515 in Avila, Spain, Teresa is shown here in a state of ecstasy, with her eyes closed and her face contorted in rapture. Surrounding her are several angels, some bearing flowers and others holding her habit and the lance with which she received her mystical wounds. The painting's vibrant colors and intricate details are characteristic of the Colonial Baroque style, which emerged in the Spanish Americas during the early modern era. The influence of Western art history is evident in the composition, with the Trinity depicted at the top, and the use of light and shadow to create depth and texture. Teresa's ecstatic experience is a common theme in hagiography, or the writing of saints' lives, and has been depicted in countless paintings and sculptures throughout history. The image of St. Teresa in ecstasy, surrounded by angels and in communion with the divine, continues to inspire awe and reverence in viewers today.
