EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic presence of Sultan Murad V, the 33rd ruler of the Ottoman Empire, during his brief reign from May 30 to August 31, 1876. Born as Mehmed VI Murad on February 21, 1840, in Istanbul, Murad ascended to the throne at the age of 36, following the deposition of his brother, Abdulaziz. Murad V is depicted here wearing the traditional Ottoman attire, including a red fez adorned with intricate gold embroidery, a long sash, and a Khan-i Dewan robe. The sultan's face is framed by a white beard and mustache, and his piercing gaze conveys a sense of determination and wisdom. The border of the oval portrait is adorned with elegant script in Turkish, inscribing his name and title as 'Sultan-i Seni' (Sultan of the State) and 'Sahib-i Sened-i Devlet' (Master of the Imperial Seal). Murad V's reign was marked by a desire for reform and modernization, but his tenure was cut short due to his mental instability. He was replaced by his brother, Abdulhamid II, who ruled until 1909. Despite his brief time on the throne, Murad V remains an intriguing figure in Ottoman history. This evocative portrait, taken in 1876 by renowned photographer Max Fruchtermann, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of the Ottoman Empire and its sultans.
