EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a group of Vietnamese soldiers, known as the Mountain Highlanders or Skirmishers, from the Lao Cai Province in Vietnam around the year 1908. The soldiers are proudly displayed in their traditional uniforms, adorned with neatly pressed khaki shirts and trousers, accented by their distinctive bamboo helmets. The Mountain Highlanders were an essential part of the French colonial army in Indochina, serving primarily as light infantry, or tirailleurs, in the mountainous regions of Tonkin, now known as northern Vietnam. Their role as skirmishers allowed them to effectively navigate the rugged terrain and engage the enemy in guerrilla warfare. Despite their well-maintained uniforms, these soldiers are shown barefoot, emphasizing their connection to the land and their adaptability to the challenging mountainous conditions. Their bare feet also served as an advantage in the wet and slippery environments common in the region. The Lao Cai Province, located in the northwestern part of Vietnam, was home to various ethnic minority groups, including the Hmong, Dao, and Tay peoples. The Mountain Highlanders were often recruited from these communities, making them an integral part of the regional military forces. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the history of the Vietnamese military during the French colonial era, showcasing the determination and resilience of the Mountain Highlanders as they defended their land and people.
