This striking photograph captures a pivotal moment in European history: the surrender of Emperor Napoleon III of France (1808-1873) to Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia (1797-1888) on September 2, 1870, following the Battle of Sedan. The Franco-Prussian War, which began in July 1870, marked the end of the Second French Empire and the beginning of the German Empire. Napoleon III, dressed in a dark military uniform with a red sash, is seen bowing before Wilhelm I, who is seated on a white horse and wearing a red and gold Prussian military uniform.
