EDITORS COMMENTS
A striking rear view of Yarrow Military Hospital in Broadstairs, Kent, UK, during the First World War. The hospital was opened around 1895 by Sir Alfred Yarrow, a renowned shipbuilder and philanthropist. In late 1914, as the war effort intensified, the Committee of Management generously offered the home to the military authorities for use as a hospital. The entire staffing and financing were taken care of by the Committee, and this arrangement continued until approximately August 1916. During this period, the hospital provided essential medical care to wounded soldiers from the British and Canadian military forces. The building, with its distinctive red-tiled roof and tall chimneys, is situated amidst lush greenery and overlooks the tranquil Birchington-on-Sea and the vast expanse of the English Channel. The sea in the background adds a poignant reminder of the long and arduous sea voyages undertaken by the soldiers who were brought to this hospital for treatment. By December 1914, the hospital was already in full swing, catering to the needs of the wounded soldiers. The hospital's staff worked tirelessly to ensure the soldiers received the best possible care. The hospital's transformation from a peaceful home to a bustling military hospital is a testament to the selflessness and generosity of Sir Alfred Yarrow and the Committee of Management. Today, Yarrow Military Hospital is no longer a military hospital but is an integral part of East Kent College in Broadstairs. The building stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the enduring spirit of philanthropy and community service.
