EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the devastating aftermath of the Hull Blitz during World War II. Taken on 9th May 1941, it shows Buckingham Street in Hull reduced to rubble and ruin. The city of Kingston upon Hull was relentlessly targeted by the German Luftwaffe, resulting in over 200 deaths during large-scale attacks throughout March 1941. The most concentrated bombings occurred on the nights of 7/8 and 8/9 May, claiming nearly 400 lives. Another significant attack took place in July that year, causing an additional 143 fatalities. From June 1940 to 1945, Hull endured more than a thousand hours under alert from air raids. In this image, one can witness the destruction caused by relentless bombing campaigns as buildings lay destroyed and streets turned into a mess of debris. The emergency services such as fire brigades and auxiliary fire service worked tirelessly amidst chaos to rescue survivors and control fires ignited by bombs. With almost twelve hundred people losing their lives due to these bombings, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience shown by the people of Hull during one of their darkest times. This Memory Lane Print is not just an image frozen in time but also a testament to human strength amidst devastation inflicted from above during World War II's turbulent years.
