Captured German submarine U-1023 on show at West Bute Basin, Cardiff Docks

Captured German submarine U-1023 on show at West Bute Basin, Cardiff Docks, Circa July 1945.
When hostilities ceased, boats still at sea were ordered to head for one of a number of designated ports and U-1023 was ordered to the Channel port of Weymouth, Dorset where her surrender was formally accepted on the 10th May 1945.
She was nominated for " Operation DeadlightO, the deliberate destruction and sinking of the majority of the German submarine fleet. However, being so new and in good condition it was decided that U-1023 would visit various ports around the British coast, manned by a Royal Navy crew (with possible German crew members to assist), in order to raise funds for the King GeorgeOs Fund for Sailors. After setting out from Portland, Dorset, on the 25th May 1945, U-1023 (now with a Royal Navy designation N-83) called at Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff, the Liverpool area, Belfast, Glasgow, and the Isle of Mull. The tour ended at the Royal Naval base at Lisahally, in Lough Foyle near Londonderry in Northern Ireland on 14 August

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured German submarine U-1023 on show at West Bute Basin, Cardiff Docks, Circa July 1945. This print takes us back to a significant moment in history when the tides of war had finally turned. As World War II came to an end, the once formidable U-1023 found itself on display at the picturesque West Bute Basin in Cardiff Docks. After receiving orders to surrender, this German submarine made its way to Weymouth, Dorset where it officially handed over control on May 10th, 1945. While many submarines were destined for destruction under "Operation Deadlight". U-1023's excellent condition and relative newness led to a different fate. Transformed into N-83 with a Royal Navy crew onboard (possibly including some former German sailors), U-1023 embarked on a remarkable journey along the British coast. Its purpose? To raise funds for the King George's Fund for Sailors. Departing from Portland, Dorset on May 25th, 1945, this floating symbol of victory visited ports such as Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool area Belfast Glasgow and even ventured as far as Isle of Mull. The tour concluded at Lisahally in Lough Foyle near Londonderry in Northern Ireland on August 14th - an unforgettable voyage that showcased both the resilience of those who fought against tyranny and their commitment to supporting those who served bravely at sea.
