After the blitzing of the City of London, Red Cross Street Fire Station

After the blitzing of the City of London, Red Cross Street Fire Station, which had been badly burned externally and only saved from destruction by the determined efforts of the Station personnel, was left surrounded by debris and wrecked buildings.
Undaunted however, firemen and forewoman got together and levelled off an area of ground opposite. The fire station which they had prior to enemy activities had been a bank.
Soil was transported from Hampstead and Finsbury Square, carried and spread by the personnel and thus, amongst the ruins, has sprung a garden, cultivated with great interest with the fire men and women of the National Fire Force of Red Cross Station.
Picture shows: personnel at work on the garden, looking west over the ruins towards Aldersgate Street.
