Ammonites. Computer artwork of ammonites in the sea during the Devonian period

Ammonites. Computer artwork of ammonites in the sea during the Devonian period. This lasted from around 408 to 360 million years ago. Ammonites were marine cephalopod molluscs, related to the similar-looking modern-day nautilus. Air chambers in their spiral shells enabled them to control their buoyancy. It is thought that they could withdraw their body into their shell for protection. These ammonites were generated for use in the Devonian Ocean Simulator, an interactive virtual reality simulation of marine wildlife at this time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing computer artwork of ammonites gracefully navigating the ancient seas during the Devonian period, which spanned from approximately 408 to 360 million years ago. Ammonites, fascinating marine cephalopod molluscs closely resembling their modern-day counterpart, the nautilus, possessed spiral shells with air chambers that granted them remarkable control over their buoyancy. These intelligent creatures could retreat into their protective shells when threatened. Crafted specifically for the immersive Devonian Ocean Simulator, an interactive virtual reality simulation of marine life in this era, these intricately designed ammonites transport us back in time to witness the wonders of prehistoric oceans. The simulator offers a unique opportunity to explore and understand the diverse wildlife that once thrived beneath ancient waves. Within this vivid illustration lies a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life – coral reefs sway gently as crinoids dance amidst schools of other extinct invertebrates. This image serves as a testament to our fascination with paleontology and provides invaluable insights into Earth's distant past. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this awe-inspiring depiction invites us to marvel at nature's creativity and reminds us of our planet's rich history waiting to be discovered through scientific exploration.
