Coloured TEM of Enterococcus faecalis

Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). This gram-positive ellipsoid bacterium tends to form short chains. The bacterium is in the process of dividing through binary fission. The regions containing the nucleic material are visible as round, yellow and red structures within the two daughter cells. E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may cause bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery and pneumonia. Magnification: x30, 000 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis, previously known as Streptococcus faecalis. The gram-positive ellipsoid bacterium is depicted in the midst of dividing through binary fission, forming short chains. Within the two daughter cells, one can observe round structures in yellow and red hues that represent the regions containing nucleic material. Enterococcus faecalis is typically found as part of the normal flora within the human alimentary tract; however, it has the potential to cause infections in the urinary tract. Additionally, this bacterium may lead to bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery and pneumonia. The magnification level at which this image was captured is an impressive x30,000 at a size of 6x4.5cm. This high-resolution view allows us to appreciate intricate details and gain insights into its structure and behavior. As we delve into microbiology and bacteriology through this photograph, we are reminded of the importance of understanding these microorganisms for medical research purposes. Notably, Enterococcus faecalis has been associated with drug resistance against glycopeptide antibiotics like vancomycin. Science Photo Library presents yet another remarkable visual representation that sparks curiosity about our microscopic world while emphasizing its relevance in various fields such as medicine and biology.
