Charles Lyell portrait engraving Stoddart

Frontispiece Volume II of the " Life Letters and Journals of Sir Charles Lyell, BART" John Murray publishers 1881. Engraving by Stoddart from a photograph. Sir Charles Lyell (14th November 1797-22 February 1875). Lyell began his career as a lawyer, but abandoned law in 1827 in favour of geology. He became famous for his three volume " Principles of Geology" (1830-1833) which proposed a uniformitarian view of geology as Hutton had before him. He believed geological processes were mostly gradual and ongoing, such that the present can be a guide to the past. His work had a great impact on Charles Darwin who believed he was taking this concept of gradual change into biology. Charles Lyell opposed evolution (transmutation) but was a sympathetic ear and partial convert to Darwinism later in life. In 1863 he published his influential, " Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable engraving of Charles Lyell, the renowned geologist and influential figure in the field of earth sciences. Created by Stoddart from an original photograph, this frontispiece portrait is featured in Volume II of "Life Letters and Journals of Sir Charles Lyell, BART" published by John Murray in 1881. Born on November 14th, 1797, Lyell initially pursued a career as a lawyer before redirecting his passion towards geology in 1827. His groundbreaking work on geological principles revolutionized the understanding of Earth's history. The three-volume masterpiece "Principles of Geology" (1830-1833) proposed a uniformitarian perspective that emphasized gradual and ongoing geological processes shaping our planet over time. This concept greatly influenced Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Although Lyell himself opposed transmutation or evolution, he became sympathetic to Darwinism later in life and played a significant role in its development. In his influential publication "Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man" (1863), he explored human origins and antiquity through geological evidence. This monochrome engraving beautifully captures Lyell's intellectual presence and deep commitment to scientific exploration. It serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation depicting one of Britain's most prominent geologists whose ideas continue to shape our understanding of Earth's past.
