EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning coloured manuscript print of the Falkland Islands, dating back to around 1805, offers a fascinating glimpse into the cartography of the time. Created by an unknown artist in the 19th century, this intricate chart is drawn in ink and wash on tracing paper, measuring 30x34.5 cm.
The map includes detailed information about latitude and longitude, with Ferro Island serving as the prime meridian. An inset shows the Straits of Le Maire at the same scale. This compilation of navigational data predates Fitzroy's survey of 1835 and was originally included as a loose insert in a Spanish atlas of the West Indies and South America.
The vibrant colours used in this manuscript add depth and character to the depiction of this remote archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. The level of detail captured on this map reflects both artistic skill and scientific precision.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, UK, this piece not only serves as a valuable historical document but also showcases the beauty and complexity of early cartography. It stands as a testament to human curiosity and exploration during a time when much of our world remained uncharted territory.
