EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a stunning Louis XV commode, dating back to around 1740. Crafted by the talented Bernard van Risamburgh, this exquisite piece of furniture stands at an impressive size of 84x178x69 cm and is part of a private collection. The commode features a serpentine-fronted moulded Portor marble top, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication. The doors are adorned with Chinese lacquer panels that have been embellished with European motifs depicting figures within picturesque landscapes. A central cartouche frames the lacquer panels, featuring intricate C-scrolls, rocaille designs, and trailing flowers. The sides of the commode showcase waved doors that open up to reveal compartments with shelves for storage. These doors are also beautifully decorated in the same style as the front panels. The angles of the piece are adorned with ruffled shell and foliate accents, adding further charm to its design. Supported by splayed legs terminating in floral scroll-cast sabots, this commode exudes gracefulness from every angle. Despite some old repairs on the marble top and minor restorations on the lacquer work, it remains an exceptional example of Louis XV craftsmanship. With its impeccable attention to detail and harmonious blend of Chinese black lacquer, polychrome elements, gilt accents, serpentine lines, and vernis finish, this Louis XV commode truly exemplifies timeless beauty and artistic mastery.
