Soon after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, in 1588, Petruccio Ubaldini wrote a brief account of the campaign and battle. Illustrations were made to accompany Ubaldini's history and Robert Adams, (1540-95), produced eleven charts or maps representing the several actions between the Armada and English fleet in 1588. Ten of the charts trace the course of the battle from the first sighting of the Armada to the fight off Gravelines. The final map traced the course of the battered Armada, as it retreated around the coast of Scotland, past the West Coast of Ireland to eventually arrive back home in Spain. The positions of some of the wrecked Spanish ships are indicated. This coloured engraving depicts the route track of the Spanish Armada as it navigated through the English Channel, into the North Sea, around Northern Scotland, and into the Atlantic Ocean on its journey back to Spain in 1590. Created by Robert Adams and engraved by Augustine Ryther, this historical map showcases the various coastlines of the British Isles, Northern France, Flanders, Holland, Denmark, and South Norway.
Following their defeat in 1588 at the hands of the English fleet led by Lord Howard, Petruccio Ubaldini documented a brief account of the campaign and battle. In response to this history, Adams produced eleven charts or maps illustrating different actions during that time. This particular chart highlights how the battered Armada retreated along Scotland's coast before passing Ireland's West Coast en route back home to Spain.
The detailed depiction includes indications of some wrecked Spanish ships along with intricate navigation lines showing their path. This print serves as a reminder of one of history's most significant naval battles and provides insight into how strategic planning played a crucial role in determining outcomes on both sides.
