EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historic helmet badge from the Coorg and Mysore Rifles, dating back to 1884-1917. The Coorg and Mysore Rifles was a volunteer unit established in southern India on November 21,1884, with its headquarters in Mercara (Madikeri). The striking silver plate helmet badge features the head of a buffalo with majestic horns positioned above a scroll displaying the name of the unit. This auxiliary unit played an essential role in maintaining peace and security during its active years. Originally formed from the Bangalore Rifle Volunteers, the Coorg and Mysore Rifles merged with the Bangalore Rifles in 1917 to create the formidable 6th Bangalore Coorg and Mysore Battalion. According to historical records from 1908, this dedicated battalion had an impressive strength of 245 soldiers. Intriguingly, after being designated as the Bangalore Battalion from October 1st, 1920 onwards, this esteemed unit regained its separate identity once again in1933. Such resilience is emblematic of their unwavering commitment to serving their country. This remarkable artifact is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection housed at London's National Army Museum.
