An incident from the five-day battle known as the Glorious First of June 1794, during the French Revolutionary War, 1793-1802, between the British fleet under Lord Howe and the French fleet under Rear-Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse. This was the first great fleet battle of the French Wars of 1793-1815. The painting shows the Vengeur du Peuple on the right, almost stern-on and flying the French flag, in action with the Brunswick to port in starboard-quarter view and flying the red ensign. The Brunswick is also in action, on her port side, with the Achille, 74 guns, shown stern-on and losing all her masts. The holes in the sails of the ships demonstrate the ferocity of the battle.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas print by Nicholas Pocock captures a dramatic moment from the Battle of the 1 June 1794, also known as the 'Glorious First of June'. The painting depicts the British ship 'Brunswick' engaging in battle with the French ship 'Vengeur du Peuple', showcasing the intensity and chaos of naval warfare during the French Revolutionary War.
The intricate details in this artwork bring to life the ferocity of combat at sea, with holes in sails and ships losing their masts amidst cannon fire. The red ensign flying from the Brunswick contrasts sharply with the French flag on Vengeur du Peuple, symbolizing the clash between two powerful naval forces.
As one of the first major fleet battles of the French Wars, this historical event marked a significant turning point in maritime history. Pocock's masterful depiction of this intense moment captures not only a pivotal military engagement but also highlights his skill as an artist in portraying action and drama on canvas.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this print serves as a reminder of bravery and sacrifice on both sides during one of history's most important naval conflicts.
