Colonization of Cyprus by the Phoenicians (litho)
8660878 Colonization of Cyprus by the Phoenicians (litho) by Rowlandson, George Derville (1861-1930) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: Colonization of Cyprus by the Phoenicians. Cyprus, with its great mineral wealth and fertile soil, so near the mainland as to be visible from the slopes of Lebanon, must at a very early date have attracted Phoenician colonists. They interpenetrated the island with their arts and crafts to such an extent that it may be regarded as a Greater Phoenicia, although there was already a civilized population there, probably mainly Greek. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the Colonization of Cyprus by the Phoenicians, a pivotal moment in history where ancient civilizations collided and intertwined. The Phoenicians, known for their seafaring prowess and advanced craftsmanship, were drawn to Cyprus for its abundant resources and strategic location near Lebanon.
Cyprus, with its rich mineral deposits and fertile land, became a hub of Phoenician culture and innovation. The island was transformed into a Greater Phoenicia as these colonists brought their arts and crafts to every corner of the land. Despite an existing Greek population on the island, the influence of the Phoenicians was undeniable.
In this detailed illustration from Hutchinson's History of Nations, we see the intricate interplay between cultures as the Phoenicians left their mark on Cyprus. The image has been digitally enhanced to bring out every nuance of this historical moment.
As we gaze upon this print by George Derville Rowlandson after Bridgeman Images' restoration work, we are transported back in time to witness the meeting of civilizations that shaped the course of history. It serves as a reminder of how interconnected our world truly is, even across centuries and continents.
