Leonidas, king of Sparta, with about eight thousand confederate Greek troops, had made a resolute defence of the narrow pass of Thermopylae against the entire Persian army. Hearing, however, that a Greek named Epialtes had treacherously guided a Persian force through the mountains, and that they would shortly be attacked in the rear, he sent his allies away while there was still time to escape. He himself with three hundred Spartan followers remained in the pass, and fought heroically to the end. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the legendary stand of Leonidas and the "Three Hundred" at Thermopylae, a defining moment in ancient Greek history. King Leonidas of Sparta, along with his small band of Spartan warriors and their Greek allies, valiantly defended the narrow pass against overwhelming Persian forces. The image depicts the moment when news reached them that a traitor had led the Persians through the mountains to attack from behind.
Despite facing certain death, Leonidas made the selfless decision to send away his allies to safety while he and his three hundred Spartans remained behind to face their fate. Their bravery and sacrifice have become symbols of courage and heroism throughout history.
The dramatic composition of this artwork conveys the tension and urgency of the situation as Leonidas prepares for battle against insurmountable odds. The rugged mountain scenery serves as a stark backdrop to this epic struggle between freedom and tyranny.
Through meticulous detail and expert shading, artist Allan Stewart brings this historic event to life with striking realism. This print is not just a visual representation but a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of those who stood firm in defense of liberty against all odds.
