8660803 Leonidas and the "Three Hundred" at Thermopylae (litho) by Stewart, Allan (1865-1951); Private Collection; (add.info.: Leonidas and the "Three Hundred" at Thermopylae. Leonidas, king of Sparta, with about eight thousand confederate Greek troops, had made a resolute defence of the narrow pass of Thermopylae against the entire Persian army. Hearing, however, that a Greek named Epialtes had treacherously guided a Persian force through the mountains, and that they would shortly be attacked in the rear, he sent his allies away while there was still time to escape. He himself with three hundred Spartan followers remained in the pass, and fought heroically to the end. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
