EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Le festin du roi Assuerus" captures the grandeur and opulence of a feast that lasted several days. Inspired by the biblical story of Esther, it depicts King Assuerus (Xerxes I) hosting a splendid banquet for the nobles of his kingdom. On the seventh day, he eagerly awaited Queen Vasti's arrival, adorned in her finest garments, to showcase her beauty to all. However, she defiantly refused to obey his command and was subsequently repudiated. In search of a new queen, young women from across the kingdom were brought before the king. Among them was Esther, cousin and adopted daughter of Mardochee (Mordekhai or Mordecai), a Judean. Chosen as Queen of Persia, she would play a pivotal role in saving her people from destruction. The tapestry itself is an exquisite example of Flemish artistry displayed at La Seo Saragosse Museum in Spain. Every detail is meticulously woven into this masterpiece: from musicians playing melodious tunes on their instruments to sumptuous food and drinks adorning banqueting tables. This image not only showcases the splendorous celebration but also highlights themes such as power dynamics, religious significance, and cultural heritage. It serves as a visual reminder of historical events while celebrating artistic expression through vibrant colors and intricate details found within Flemish tapestries.
