His Royal Highness Prince William Henry, 1782 (aquatint)
7337571 His Royal Highness Prince William Henry, 1782 (aquatint) by West, Benjamin (1738-1820); 62.2x45.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Benjamin West; Francesco Bartolozzi; Paul Sandby; A. Poggi
Prince William Henry, third son of King George III, entered the Navy during the War of American Independence and first met young Captain Nelson at New York while a midshipman in Lord Hood's flagship there. He became a competent officer but lacked tact and judgement. As captain of the frigate Pegasus he later served under Nelson in the West Indies in 1784-1785, at a time when Nelson was making himself unpopular trying to enforce the Navigation Acts that forbade direct trade between British possessions and the newly independent United States. Nelson also backed the Prince in an intemperate dispute with his first lieutenant, which further dented his reputation at the Admiralty and at Court, where William was out of favour. The prince, later King William IV, remained a loyal friend of Nelson all his life.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning aquatint print captures the regal and distinguished presence of His Royal Highness Prince William Henry, the third son of King George III. Painted by Benjamin West, Francesco Bartolozzi, Paul Sandby, and A. Poggi, this portrait showcases Prince William Henry in all his glory as a young naval officer during the War of American Independence.
Prince William Henry's naval career began when he entered the Navy and met Captain Nelson while serving as a midshipman in Lord Hood's flagship in New York. Despite his competence as an officer, he was criticized for lacking tact and judgement. Serving under Nelson on the frigate 'Pegasus' in the West Indies further highlighted his controversial reputation due to disputes with his first lieutenant.
Despite these challenges, Prince William Henry remained a loyal friend to Nelson throughout his life. Eventually becoming King William IV, he continued to support and honor their friendship despite facing disfavor at both the Admiralty and Court.
This portrait not only immortalizes Prince William Henry's youthful appearance but also serves as a reminder of his complex relationships within both military and royal circles during this tumultuous period in history.
