The Stanley family crest of an eagle and baby carved next to his head commemorate the legend of an ancestor finding a baby in an eagles nest. This story has been preserved in several pub signs in England, including The Eagle and Child in St Giles, Oxford, where J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis and other Inklings gathered to drink and talk about their ideas.
